Mary’s Diner was one of my favorite spots to grab a bite to eat, whenever I had the time. I always loved coming here, because not only was the food delicious, but Mary had a pretty strict rule about customers not bothering other customers, regardless of the circumstances. The rumor in town was that Mary had originally put the rule in place after a famous actor had stopped by the diner, but was pretty much run out of the place when a mob of fans tried to get him to autograph their napkins, their arms, their boobs.

Even so, I was thankful for the rulebook, especially right now, as I sat across from Jenny. I would’ve hated it if anyone had tried to interrupt our dinner together, especially knowing that she was going to be gone any day now to record her EP in Los Angeles.

And I hated to admit it, but a part of me was worried that maybe she’d never find her way back.

“They’re having one of those hokey award ceremonies at work tomorrow,” I started, as I looked over the diner’s menu. “Jacob said the word around the office is that I’m up for Favorite CEO. Yeah, like they have any other choice.”

Jenny chuckled at my joke before she tapped her fingers along the table. “Ugh. I haven’t had a chocolate milkshake in forever. Or a burger. Or seasoned fries.”

Jenny then let out a long sigh, as she asked, “What happens if I order half the menu? Do they take my picture and put me up on one of the walls here? Like I’m participating in one those quick-eating contests?”

“I think the only thing that happens if you order half the menu is that we have to try to find a way to fit a bunch of those Styrofoam containers in the backseat of the car.” I laughed before I went on. “But you should order whatever you want. You’ve been working hard. You deserve it.”

“Oh, you shouldn’t have said that.” Jenny frowned. “Now, I’m definitely going to order half the menu.”

“…Are you excited for your trip?” I forced myself to ask the question, even though the last thing I wanted to hear about was how Jenny was going to be leaving soon enough.

“Yes, and no,” Jenny answered. “Yes, because it feels like my dream is finally starting to come true, you know? I mean, I used to fantasize about being discovered at Frankie’s by someone like Roger Western sitting out in the crowd. And even though I never thought it would happen like this, with me getting so much attention because I’m your—”

Jenny stopped herself, mid-sentence, giving me a small smile. “You know.”

“Fiancée? Yeah, I know.” I smiled right back at her. “But what’s the no part, then?”

“No, because it’s absolutely nerve-wracking to think about performing in front of Roger,” she replied. “What happens if he tells me that I suck? Or that I’m much better on video, but watching me live makes him physically ill?”

“Physically ill?” I smirked.
